Just pontificating what to change my Speed Triple for in a few months, and looking at options/budget. I am quite keen to give a Tiger a go, and found a 2007 1050 with 39,000 on the clock.
It looks good, it is cheap and it seems to have been well maintained? I probably won't go for it (unless it is still hanging around in a couple of months). Just interested in what others think about it. My take is that if it has that many miles on the clock in 3 years it must have been a good one so could be worth the gamble. The next cheapest has half the miles for only £700 more, but misses out on a full 3 box luggage set up which would cost me the same again to add.
And it isn't black (like the high miler!)
Just incase you are interested/want to slag off my shortlist as it stands - the bikes I am planning on trying to decide between are:
Possibly some of the Jap sport/tourer and perhaps some Beemers if I see anything... and Prillia? Anything that is good for long days riding with a decent amount of luggage potential really!
If you've got a CB1300 on the list I'd put a GS1250 Suzuki on there too.
Also, if you've got a Sprint on it, why not a Blackbird?
But clearly the obvious ommisson is a Multistrada 1000S
I bought a 3 year old BMW F800S with 50k on it. Bahnstormer the BMW shop told me afterwards that the previous owner had been a courier and as he earned his living from it he never spared the plastic if any needed doing. They said it was a very well mainted bike and there was no worries. I sold it on to a German guy as it was too small for me. He was not concerned either when he saw the service record.
In short, I would, if it had good service history.
I am just not sure about the big bandit, perhaps a ZXR1200 could sneak a look in, but just as I really like big nakeds... they just aren't ideal as my only bike (at the moment).
The Blackbird keeps coming on and off the list. I think the sheer power of them is mostly overkill for me! It's the same with the BMW K1200S... but again, if I see a good one whilst in a dealership I will probably "have a go" and see what happens!
The 'Strada... interesting thought - that and the ST3/4 could pop on the list if I happen accross them....
Did I mention - I am more likely to be found on random A & B roads than anything too close to a main road/dual carriageway/motorway... though use these if needs must (the odd trunk road single carriageway I am not averse to!). Much rather be having an adventure than riding in a straight line, no matter how fast ;-)
It is almost certain to be another Triumph though ;-)
There seems to be mostly a feeling that if it is well maintained the mileage shouldn't be an issue. Not sure how many miles I am liable to do - I can't use it as daily transport as my job requires more carrying capacity than even the biggest bike, and 4 wheel drive is handy too!
If I see one then I shall certainly take a closer look.
To be honest every dealership I go into will be perused most closely and anything that looks slightly interesting will be considered and (if they let me) test ridden until I find "the one" ;-)
When a bike gets to that sort of mileage it's down to the condition of the bike itself rather than age/mileage to make the judgement on. If it seems OK, not smoking or rattling (more than usual for a Triumph!), the suspension isn't hanging off and there is a service history then why not. If would say for a higher mileage bike I'd only do it if you or someone else is familiar with the type and make a reasoned judgement though.
