    Default Build blogs

    Prompted by BBO's Transit Camper Conversion thread in GM and of course the interest in EddieJ's build projects, I wondered if anyone had found any more "How i spent the last 15 years and the wife's money" blogs on the web?

    I've been following this one for a couple of years:

    Arctic Tern Boat Project

    It's a Canadian guy building a boat, an 'Arctic Tern'. He's a bit of a perfectionist as are a lot of these people but I have to admire his antifoul treatment (in volume 3).

    Did you ever see the one that was televised about the guy building an aeroplane from scratch? he very nearly cracked up, it was painful to watch sometimes. I don't know if he ever finished it actually.

    Some nice work on that Excelsior! Just had a quick flip through but will spend some more time on it later.

    I've had a bit better look at that Boat build, good stuff.

    It's about the only type of Blogging I have any interest in at all, seems a lot of people only blog the shite that nobody else would listen to in a conversation but that one could be turned into a book.

    Well written with masses of clear pictures.

    In fact, I might just copy it to Word and make a PDF booklet out of it, that way I can have a copy to read when I want.

    Thanks very much for posting the link.

    Since I moved out here and effectively gave up bikes (I still do a bit of fixing on locals' scooters) I been hovering around boat sites to check out building and repair. I've always liked boats (had to leave a good one in UK ) and I spend probably more time working on them now than I ever did bikes.

    The thing with wood is that it's fairly easy to work with if you have the tools (as you know) and fibreglass is quite easy to work with too, What surprised me about that boat build is that it's a basic stitch and glue hull to start with. I'd have thought that for the size of boat it would have been built on frames. I'm planning on a 15 ft sailing dinghy that'll be built on frames and the only thing holding me back really is having somewhere to work. Down in the car park with power on an extension lead isn't really a viable option although it's how I do a fair number of repairs

    Building bikes and cars or campers requires a lot more different skills I think (although that's possibly because I don't have those skills). That Excelsior has some lovely touches on it and building engines (he is basically building engines for them isn't he?) is definitely out of my league.

    Dammit! I just spent four hours reading that and it isn't even finished.

    Bugger. Now I'm hooked.

    Hope it floats.

    He'd have finished it 18 months ago if he didn't keep changing his mind about what wood to use where, or should that sheer rail radius be 3/8 or 1/2 . . .

    This one is the daddy for me;

    History

    A chap who built a Lamborghini Countach from scratch in his basement (and then had to dig under the house to get it out)

    This isn't bad (not finished though);

    1700bhp Granada
