Default Wiring horrors?

As you may, or may not, know I'm working in Afghanistan at the moment. I'm a bit bored this morning so I thought I'd share some pictures of the beautiful wiring jobs in the house I'm in.

We can't really run the water pump, water heater and air conditioning at the same time. Sometimes even just having the lights on will trip the breakers. Most people unplug the water heaters whilst showering anyway. Earth connections aren't very popular and a couple of guys have had very tingly showers

A lot of the spurs that have been run in use something akin to bell wire. I'm just glad my office and kit is wired off a separate breaker with a big UPS and an earth spike in the garden.

This is the main distribution board for the roof area. You don't want to see it with the cover off.

This is the main incomer for the immersion water heater in my bathroom. Note where the spur has been taken from and safely taped up.

This is the socket that the immersion heater is plugged in to. Note the light and switch above the sink. There is another light and similar switch opposite the shower nozzle.

Aren't landlords supposed to make sure everything's up to scratch?

yep.. and you're supposed to have a contract, and it's not supposed to fall down, and you're supposed to pay the rent.

What's your point?

We're obviously in one of the posh houses

It's a pity the supply to the house isn't very stable tonight

Here's what happens when the city power jumps from it's usual 200(ish)V to 360V:

I'm not sure how this happened as it was connected to a pretty hefty UPS and the unit itself is supposed to be a surge filter

any particular reason for doubling the voltage? just to annoy peeps?

TBH, I wouldn't expect a UPS to filter 160v excess and I'm not surprised it passed the explosion on

Might be when the generating station swaps generators. You could tell when they did it up here as all the lights would get really bright, then go dim and then settle back down to normal. The closer you were to the power station the worse it was.

We're linked to the national grid now so it doesn't happen anymore
