If they are free range then they shouldn't need grit your right. as G_S has one we've put a lot of straw down in the coop and the run and are feeding them extra corn and scraps (on top of all the layer pellets they can eat). We are still getting 4 or 5 eggs a day from 6 hens.

It's the water supply that's proving a problem at the moment - out with a kettle first thing to melt the ice.
