USB to RJ45

Is there a cable? trying to sus out if i can connect my external hard disk straight into the router. Cheers...

Is there a cable? trying to sus out if i can connect my external hard disk straight into the router.

I don't know of there is a cable but I think there is an adaptor.

I say this because I think I have one. I'll go and look.

but I wouldn't have though that a USB hard drive could, normally, "talk" IP or MS Networking or whatever

It's a Belkin USB 2.0 network adapter. Has a MAC address. Male USb to female RJ45.

I was reading some forums and all i can find is either buy a NAS drive or new router with a USB socket But there must be another way.

I suggest two possible directions from here.
1/ Take the 30 quid the Belikn would cost you and go to the pub
2/ Put the 30 quid the Belikn would cost you in a jar towards the cost of a NAS drive.

both will produce a more satisfying result.

You can do it if the disk if configurable for IP.

Um... 500Gb. LaCie. Not sure about the OS. Like this one but 500Gb.

Yeah, works fine. It actually went wrong (though just couldn't connect to it, the data was fine) and got it repaired under warranty. Like new again now and with the drive reformatted, but I've bought a RAID setup since then so it's just sat boxed in my spare room since I got it back from LaCie.

Maybe 80 quid?
