All docks do, that's the point. The headphone socket will use the built-in DAC for headphone use, but connecting via the dock output will send the signal straight to the amp to be decoded. As I said, it only takes a 15 quid dock to do this.

If compact good looks are important to Mrs TC, how about this:

ARCAM SOLO MINI CD/MP3/DAB/FM SYSTEM WITH irDOCK iPOD DOCK, MUSO SPEAKERS & CONNECTING CABLES - available from Superfi UK Visit http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/product_id/5783 for details

Seems to do all you want, gets good reviews, almost in budget.

Errrm..... no. Most docks simply provide a composite audio output, not a digital output.

Sweet

I couldn't be bothered to check my fact so thought I'd say it anyway and let someone confirm or deny it

So we're not really looking for HiFi then? Be honest.

You don't need to be a HiFi buff to recommend a mini system.

...and it sounds like that's what you want.

Nothing wrong with that but it's as far away from HiFi as a CB500 is from being a world superbike.

Screwd.

I'm not looking for B&O if that's what you mean. And as has been said a mini system is unlikely to do what I want, hence that's the direction I'm leaning and looking for advice from anyone prepared to give it.

Assuming anyone else ever gets to see this thread now some clever cnut has buried it

Thanks

Isn't it now in the right forum, and the 3rd most popular of 29?

I think Olly's suggestion is a good starting point tbh. Being Arcam you can be assured it will sound decent. My missus hates my system with large speakers and cables everywhere - she'd like summat like the system that Olly suggested.

BandO systems are for people with more money than ears. They sound great but are about as "value for money" as a gold plated banana.

Bose will give you a really nice sound but not for a grand unless you're happy with their Wave system which is excellent but not a stereo "system" per se.

You could go down the route of active speakers. Meridian used to do some pretty decent one's. Doesn't get much easier than that and at least they're proper HiFi in the strict meaning of the phrase.

Screwd.

I would argue that in the forum most people only go to to ask what's wrong with their PC no it isn't. Fortunately being launched in General some people did get to see it.

And I do appreciate all inputs, curmudgeonly old git that I am or not

Sounding like a trip to Superfi could be in order

I have an alternative solution.... ride a motorbike without ear plugs for a few years, like me, and they you won't be able to tell the difference between a live performance and FM radio....which makes it possible to buy a great system for thrupence
