Recently it's just down to them cutting costs while giving the customer perceived extra value without having to lower the price. Changing the actual physical hardware and capabilities of the machine turns me off to it though, no BC when they made such a huge deal of it at launch is annoying.
No HDMI cable is stupid too, there must be loads of people unimpressed with Blu-ray because they're watching it over a crappy composite Scart connection. The orignal PS2 was similar, you couldn't save games on Chrismas morning because Sony had saved a few pence by not including a memory card in the box. Sigh.

Problem solved in the interim. A friend of a friend has a PS3 with the game I wish to play, so were going to do a swap for my Xbox360 for a month and see how it goes.

I'd be interested to hear what you both think after the swap.
Which game is it? Uncharted is the only one I'd be interested in but I can't justify the cost of the system for just one game.

He is offshore just now so the swap won't be happening until after the New Year, but I'll post again on this thread or send you a pm.

It's Ratchet and Clank. I've bought and enjoyed every game obsessively from the start (bar the most recent) and likewise, I cannot justify the cost of a new PS3 just to play it.

Re: Best PS3 deals?
Ratchet & Clank TOD is a classic, or at least a classic platformer with a sense of humour that will have you grinning from ear to ear. Good value for money too-50+hours of playing time.
MGS4 remains the greatest PS3 release imo, although Fallout 3 is stunning. Farcry 2 is also alright if you are into that genre.
I couldn't stand Unchartered, plus it had oodles of racist stereotyping to boot..
No idea what the fuss is about BC. Old games are just that, and made to look even more so if you are all wired up for 1080/720p. There are some classics from the PS2, but I have kept PS2's (4 of them) if I want to play them. I haven't bothered yet in over a year of owning the PS3.
Also, getting caught up in HDD size is daft. Just get an additional external HDD (sizes now are zany) and you're good to go. I've got a 500gb attached to my 40gb PS3.
If I were in your shoes, I'd get an entrance level PS3 and tart it up at your leisure. Don't forget that Bluray is also a MASSIVE plus point for having a PS3, assuming you've got the right TV.

If you like online gaming, then 'Left 4 dead' (L4D) is the greatest online game in years btw. Available on Steam (but don't let that put you off).

Couple of things. First there's Sony ridiculing the 360's partial BC, before reneging on their promise to give 100% BC with the PS3. Then there's the need to have to keep or buy a PS2 if you want to play PS2 games. That not just means more clutter, it means kids don't get any money from selling their PS2 and remain at the mercy of the PS2's famous problem, its fragile laser.
By removing BC, Sony have thrown away 99% of the PS3's gaming library and completely removed the single biggest reason a PS2 gamer would have for buying a PS3 over the 360 or Wii as his next step.

You can't play games from an external drive, your 40GB will still get filled up with mandatory game installs, you should have bought an internal one. All yours is good for is storing media, which you could just as easily stream from your PC or wherever.
Don't forget that Bluray is also a MASSIVE plus point for having a PS3, assuming you've got the right TV.
Assuming you care, I know I don't. Standalone BD players are now better and cheaper than the PS3, you could buy one plus a 360 for about the same money as a PS3 if you were so inclined.
Blu-ray is not taking off as Sony might have hoped, meanwhile HVDs are in development which can hold 150 times as much data as BD, not to mention the terabyte solid state alternative, a snip at just over $1.5 million

Re: Best PS3 deals?
Media storage is why I purchased the external drive, and as I have everything streaming wirelessly in the house, It doesn't really matter where I put the external HDD.
I don't really care about Blu-Ray, I wouldn't want to personalise something so b0rg. It is however the best of what is available at the moment, and that is without the need to get retrospectively anal about betamax HD DVD and its relative merits. HVD may well be super-duper, but I'll look at that when it's out. Or i'll look at whatever is proposed to replace HVD. It doesn't stop, but for now BR is just fine.
Besides, I don't really want to buy an X-box. Not now, at this late stage of its life. The games on the PS3 are improving all the time, and the selection right now is giving me a light wallet. I will say that the PS3 is worth it for MGS4 alone though.
As an extension of Moore's law, I'd fully expect standalone BR to exceed the capability of the PS3 BR, but then a standalone BR won't let me play COD 5 at 2 am.
Bluray IS worth having if you enjoy HD, which I do. I've never had a fragile laser on my PS 2's, but it is a well known fault. I've got 4 to prepare for the worst. I'd still prefer that than the red circle of death or whatever the xbox has.

Re: Best PS3 deals?
I can see how it might seem otherwise, but I'm not here to persuade anyone to buy one machine over another, beyond saying that there's currently nothing on either which the other couldn't do. As games machines they are equally matched and both have a couple of exclusives which may be considered by some to be reason enough to buy the machine. If these don't matter to you though, Blu-ray is the defining difference and the reason the PS3 is twice the price - if I only want to play games then that's a tough ask of my wallet.
Obviously, if you have a big 1080p TV and a 7.1 surround sound speaker system then you probably will want to take advantage of it, but for most people who are in the least bit price sensitive, upscaled DVD and 5.1 surround sound is probably good enough until Blu-ray is superseded.
y2blade, I'd be interested to hear your comparison/thoughts on your two consoles.
