I don't know much about them but there are two things to consider... yes, they'll be shit compared to wired ones, and presumably they'll need power. So that'll be a wire anyway, just maybe a shorter one

yeah, thanks, didnt think of the power aspect, sort of defeats the whole purpose.
Wired ones it is then

Looks like you can get battery powered ones, only did a simple search and this was first hit, quarter way down the page -
Each speaker uses 6 x AA batteries ...
though no telling how often the batteries would need replacing

Wireless power for speakers has been demonstrated already, I don't know if it's in production already. That's actually a pretty amazing concept, broadcasting power wirelessly.

It certainly is.
They'll still be shit though

Well, all the ones that I've read about that are powered are shit so I can't see that powering them by a different method would make them better.
I've no doubt that since it's possible that it's the future and they'll be standard one day, probably quite soon, but wires is unfortunately where it's still at wrt audio connections.

Re: Wireless surround sound speakers??
I live in an apartment and my needs were a little different, but maybe the device I purchased will work for you. I wanted to pump music from my computers to my patio. I found the neatest device that works fantistically. It is the RCA Wireless Speakers with 900 MHz transmitter. The transmitter fits into any device that has an earplug. It comes with 2 speakers. They run on batteries (or can be plugged in electric socket.) I carry one of the speakers (battery run)outside with me and leave the other one inside. Gorgeous music goes with me everywhere. Check these speakers out. I tried 3 others before I found this one. None of the others worked; the RCA did.

It strikes me that this might be possible using networking hardware. You can already get ethernet over powerline hardware. I wonder if it's possible to utilise remote speakers near a power outlet, therefore providing power to the speakers. And then...hmm...thinking...use the ethernet-powerline hardware to feed the speakers with audio.......probably via some sort of network based device...a router or something...perhaps a basic media server
I suppose, in theory, you might need to have another router or media server type device to supply audio from your chosen source...dunno really how much the ethernet-powerline hardware is capable.
Sounds like an interesting open source project possibly

Talk about over-engineering a solution.
In fact, speakers which can be plugged into an electrical socket and play audio which is being piped around the power lines have been available for probably 20 years now. You still have the problem of the power cable though.

Oh.
Well I didn't know that. But it might still do away with the audio cables. As long as there is a power outlet near the chosen site for the speakers.
Any ideas where such speakers can be sourced from?
Edit: Having had a quick Google after what SM said, I found some mention of this: Accurian HomePlug® Digital Receiver/2 Amp + 1 Sender - eBay (item 170257793798 end time Oct-01-08 23:29:11 PDT) being quite/very good.

If you're going to bury cables in the wall then you may as well bury the speaker wire as the power cable. If you don't mind wires then you may as well keep the speaker wire, no?

Sorry, that was an assumption on my part, having heard of such a product in the market 15 years hence, or more. Whether or not it's still in production or if the technology has evolved, I don't know. At the time it was just simple speakers which plugged into the wall outlet anywhere in the house, although I don't know how the sound signal was injected into the copper wires in the first place...
The Thanks is for the effort you made in finding one possible solution, although it still seems expensive and over-engineered, depending on your needs.
