Traffic simulation

I stumbled across this which shows the simulated effects of vehicles joining roads, hills, merges etc. Fascinating and provides hours of harmless fun.........

It is interesting - it's noticable that simply removing the conditions that caused congestion doesn't always cause the congestion to go away...

It's interesting but not particularly realistic. For example, in the "lane closing" simulation, once you cause a jam the blocked lane hardly moves when we all know that the blocked lane moves faster than the clear lane.

When I was at LCC the control freaks traffic signals planners had a computer modelling programme which was very good; I've seen the end result and the models were very accurate.

I wanted to use the modelling on a scheme I was doing, a big roundabout. However, to set the thing up properly I would have needed a weeks worth of traffic count and speed figures for all approaches and the roundabout itself, a weeks worth of video from about 5 different places and a couple of days of people sitting at strategic places around the roundabout doing an origin and destination study. I didn't have the money available for all of that so no modelling, which was a both a shame and a good thing. My scheme caused a lot of queueing which maybe could have been avoided but the queueing also meant the HA took over and did what we wanted to really do but couldn't afford.

Like most programs, modelling is dependent on good data and rubbish in, rubbish out.

Couldn't find it on the web the last time I searched, but there used to a be a site with an article comparing traffic merging at M-way junctions with turbulent flow analysis of liquids where two pipes join.

Suggesting was that you get the initial turbulence as traffic joins, then a bit later a further 'sort out' as other people change to the lane they really want to be in - suggestion was about 1 mile later.
