Quick thread for a mate of mine, he's 40ish and wants a bike. He's had a car licence for years and years... If he does CBT and DAS, can he then ride any bike right away ? Will he need to do a theory test ? His missus is Dutch, and on a Dutch licence but has now got a counterpart to allow her to do UK stuff. Does she start from scratch needing 2 years on a restricted licence ? or is she the same as mate above ? thanks all.

| I'm not completely sure what that means. When I last looked into this for my wife, who's French, I go the impresion she needed to replace her French licence with a UK one in order to be able to take a UK motorcycle test. But she does have an antique licence, and maybe that's the difference.

Anybody over the age of 21 can take a full UK A class motorcycle test, as long as they hold the following:- A valid DL196 (CBT) certificate A Theory Test certificate A valid UK driving licence, provisional will suffice. Upon successful completion of the practical test (if taken upon a motorcycle of more than 33bhp, normally 48bhp) they will be entitled to ride any motorcycle unrestricted on the UK highways. |

| I don't think that is correct. For Direct Access the bike on which you take your test has to be >35 Kw (>46.6 bhp) IIRC. Otherwise you get a licence restricted to 33 bhp for 2 years.

You can take a test leading to a full motorcycle licence from 17 on... but unless you are 21 or over, you must take the test on a 125 producing not more than 14.6hp, in which case you get a full RESTRICTED licence with a two year 33hp limit if you pass. If you are 21 or over, you can take Direct Access on a bike producing not less than 46.6hp, and on passing get a full UNRESTRICTED licence entitling you to ride any machine of any power output immediately.
