Default Rucksack advice

I'm looking for a rucksack, quite a large one - 100 or more litres or as close to 100 as I can get. It will be used whilst I am on the bike (so I can ride to dive sites with my dive equipment), so it can't be too long as to interfere with my riding such as not being able to sit up, or it getting caught on the pillion seat.

Any advice as to what one to get/recommendations?

Cheers in advance.

You know how big 100l is? I mean, I have a 70ish litre camping sack, which is cavernous, and that's almost too big to ride with. Sounds like you need a full set of luggage to me.

edit - must type faster

I struggle with a 35l Kriega on a long trip...its bloody hard work carrying all that weight... 100l sounds way to much to me to carry in a rucksack....

Advice DO NOT DO IT .
ask my mrs about bikes and rucksacks
i think you'd be better off with a tank bag and throwovers and only then use a small rucksack.

I wouldn't put all my dive kit in a rucksack personally. I get all mine in my drysuit bag (weights at the bottom), and then bungee and strap that to the pillion seat. When that's secure, I bungee the BCD (that and the cylinder are the only bits of my kit that don't fit inside the drysuit bag) on top of the drysuit bag. It's uber secure and doesn't affect the bike even as much as having a pillion on.

If you really must have a rucksack, then I really recommend the Osprey Aether 70. It's not quite as big as you reckon you want, but they're bloody good bags - much better for 'general' use than Berghaus or whatever IMO. Light as well.

I should add that although i had one of those para bergens i wore it once on a bike and it was a struggle as it completely upset the balance and weight distribution when cornering so makes your normal steering input completely alien.

After that the largest one i took was a 40L Berghaus

I normally use a 70l sack for backpacking and I can't even begin to imagine what riding a bike would be like wearing it.

Trust me, a 100l sack is like having a wardrobe on your back.

Well you already know I think you should look at proper luggage options for the bike.

I rate my ventura luggage highly and love the fact it lets me carry tonnes of stuff (admittedly could be more interesting with the underseat exhausts for putting gear on the rear rack). But having said that you might be able to make a fire retardant base.

That said it is a lot more expensive than a rucksack

Move along - nothing to see here

Riding to a Dive Site - Madness I tell ye!

Luggage / panniers would probably be a better option - plus how much dive kit are you talking here? Just the basics or the whole shebang?

Nah's not. I do it all the time. Where else can you get the benefit of going from leather to rubber and back again.

I even take my clinder - strapped across the pillion seat, the the drysuit bag half on the pillion seat and half on the rack behind. Makes perfect sense to me.
