The molecules are small enough to penetrate flesh, but they don't react with the chemicals in skin/muscle etc. They do react with bone, which means they start corroding your skeleton away. You can't wash it off either, 'cause obviously water won't penetrate your flesh.

So when manufacturers advise you not to approach a burning vehicle (even a 'small' fire) they really really mean it.

Dear me. that sounds just too much fun and to think I was looking at one of those and thinking of it in a sort of "next bike" perhaps way... I'll stick with drooling on Trog's Griso instead. Good that you got off lightly and saved a potentially nasty situation.

It's a conspiracy by senior, budget holding management. As far as they're concerned, bikes are far too expensive to run, crash too often and all the police riders have constant grins on their faces. On top of that there's the endless "training" weeks / months where plod get to hoon around the country on someone else's bike.

So far the dark powers at work within headquarters have been lucky that their unsanctioned sabotage has only killed one or two riders and they've been able to cover that up. How many more fatalities will it take before the truth comes out?

Are you suggesting Mr Dazzle is wrong?

Sounds about right to me, from school chemistry lessons many moons ago.

From Hydrofluoric acid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

...Hydrofluoric acid is corrosive and a contact poison. It should be handled with extreme care, beyond that accorded to other mineral acids, in part because of its low dissociation constant, which allows HF to penetrate tissue more quickly. Symptoms of exposure to hydrofluoric acid may not be immediately evident. HF interferes with nerve function and burns may not initially be painful. Accidental exposures can go unnoticed, delaying treatment and increasing the extent and seriousness of the injury. HF is known to etch bone, and since it penetrates the skin it can weaken bones without destroying the skin....

Unless you were refering to my 'Hydroflouric acid', which is presumably made from wheat.

Is there anything that safeguards against this occuring?

Just being aware it happens isn't going to stop it happening....and some of us may not be so lucky in getting off the bloody thing as quick as you did.

Try and find some second hand 1100 Pans? I'm going to be speaking to our tech people later, and possibly BMW themselves. I'm hardly over enamoured with the 1200 as it is, especially as we've already had people left stranded all over the place due to the ignition key deciding it wants to reprogramme it's immobiliser chip at random. In addition there have been issues regarding what fuel we can use in them. The bikes are supposed to be run on 97 RON unleaded, but we held stocks only of diesel and 95 RON unleaded. Initially we were told by BMW that they would be fine on the 95 RON, but then a couple of bikes went pop and we had to revert to 97 RON purchased from public filling stations. Now the bikes have apparently been remapped to run on 95 RON.

The fire itself was quite minor and confined to the engine, and was the rather less worrying aspect of the incident. It actually managed to burn itself out before the brigade turned up, not all that surprising as they were coming from 18 bloody miles away and had to carry on past me for another six miles to get to the next junction so they could turn around and come another six miles back.
