I do a LOT of long trips on various bikes, recently I made a trip to Lands End from London, I don't do motorways, so it was all A and B roads. I nailed it all the way. I got there at about 12.30pm after leaving at 8.30am.

I'm pretty damn sure that if i'd ridden my Ural outfit there at a steady 55mph, i'd not have arrived until late afternoon.

Can anyone explain why this might be?
solo <> outfit ........ Overtaking ...... traffic jams.

Is this a serious question?

Partly.

People seem to be seriously suggesting that going faster doesn't make one arrive earlier.

I agree that perhaps the odd fast spurt might not make that much difference, but sustained faster speed most definitely, and logically, and certainly does.

I used the outfit as an extreme example.

Had I bimbled down on the same bike, I still wouldn't have arrived until much later...

But if you had read the previous post you would see the context

Try it, just use the bikes advantage in traffic hold-ups and stick to the same speeds as the rest of the traffic otherwise.

And wouldn't the roads be a nicer place if we all did this or understood it

Ok, so I didn't read the whole thread. Rumbled.

But why on earth would I want to try your final suggestion? What for? What would be the point?

On that point though, I don't really do motorways, and most traffic snarl ups are on them. Unless you are suggesting that riding in town is just a fast by car, in which case you are clearly insane.

I ride in London a lot. It takes an absolute age on the sidecar (same restriction as a car) but on the bike it's a hell of a lot quicker. (I assume this is pretty obvious to anyone).

You say that but \i only have a 20 mile commute, yes the journey time may be quicker on the bike if there is traffic by a couple of minutes. It will however have taken me at least half an hour more in planning time to wear the correct togs and get in and out of fort knox the garage so unless the sun is out it's not worth the bother especially in the school holidays

Because you arrive with zero stress build up and don't need half an hour to unwind. During the trip it allows you to see more of what is going on rather than total focus on that tunnel vision of can I pass the next vehicle (the source of stress).

I think this is where the glorious point can be made that we are all different.

I arrive anywhere I travel to by bike without a glimmer of stress. I never need to unwind, regardless of speed travelled. Riding fast past traffic doesn't stress me, I love it.

However, as an owner of two very slow bikes as well as the quicker variety, I completely agree that sometimes it is pleasant to travel at a lesser pace. I recently rode to Italy at a maximum speed of 55mph. It was fantastic.

I wear the same togs every day for regular trips, waterproofs are on the bike, bike's parked outside the door, gone in sixty seconds. No bother. People do make life so complicated. A bike should be about less being more. You've made it sound like it's an irritable bowel.

I bought a K100RS 16v many years ago. Was fab at your sort of journey but I just couldn't live with it round town. Very, very heavy bike and an absolute workout in heavy traffic. But if it was pissing with rain and cold I'd still jump on it to do a long journey though. One of only a few bikes I'd bother to do that on.

My views and tastes have changed lately though and if I had that sort of journey to do i'd go for a maxi scooter. The tmax fits this bill nicely. Low maintenance. good on juice. Comfy. Add the cheapo deflectors for excellent weather protection and the real beaut is the auto transmission. But I appreciate its not to everyones taste.

Back to the original question ; Dullville every time.

Wonder about my avatar? CLick this www.freeschapelle.net/

As do I and I find that being in the car, unable to zoom past slow traffic, stresses me to within a whisker of my head exploding. I can't stand the middle/outside lane hoggers and the morons who won't get out of my way.

If I ever get this boring shoot me:
