What's the budget? If it's £3k or so you're starting to get into R1150GS territory and they are well worth having for long commuting trips. Mine gives me 50+mpg (measured) at 80mph, tyres are cheap, and servicing is a doddle to do at home (right up until it needs a new clutch...) Or have you considered a maxi scoot? Some of the bigger ones would probably fit the bill. Someone hit the nail on the head for me upthread though, I currently commute half the distance you do, and enjoy it year round on the bike. Much further though and I'd be looking at getting a small car if the traffic wasn't too bad. |

Agree with both of these. have done similar milage commutes and you HAVE to enjoy riding the bike otherwise you'll seriously HATE the whole experience and become a bitter and twisted bastard (in which case you'll eventually buy a Pan anyway ).Regarding the BMWs - remember that you won't be looking at the thing when riding it, and go and test a few different bikes - BMs, Pan, Deau etc etc - anything you can get your hands on. Perfetly welcome to try a spin on my Rockster if you want? | ||

| it's what I do... ![]() Oh yeah - was going to say - you don't NEED too much power - I used to do A40/M40 to High Wycombe on a 550Zephyr (the Mirth) and it was perfectly fast enough (when ragged merciliessly I admit - but that was part of the fun ), but also comfy through traffic and easy to ride gently when my mind was elsewhere.

I commute 110 miles a day on my Bros. Way better than anything else I've tried and a hoot as well. Boring, what isn't, on the m-way though and I prolly wouldn't want to Winter on it (but then I'm in the "you must be mental to go out on a bike in the Winter" camp anyway). Ideally, if I really had to use a bike year-round, I'd have something I loved riding March/November (ish) and then a horrid, spunk-covered, fully-faired, double-insulated hatecycle for the real depths of Winter. I don't think there is a 'best of both Worlds' option for the UK climate. |

| Now yer talking. Seriously though, much as I love my TDM, there are few things to consider for that sort of mileage, besides the chain drive:Fairing is nowhere near as good a Deauville nor a Pan;You need to make sure the coils are properly insulated (using amalgamating tape - easily done); There have been issues with fuel consumption - emulsion tubes wearing and letting more fuel through - sorted using a Factory Pro jet kit (or probably a Dynojet kit).Otherwise I'd highly recommend it. |
