Default Buying a BMW? Don't bother with the computer as an accessory.

The one I have on the K1200R is complete pap.

It shows the following functions:-

Clock:- works OK
Average speed:- If you reset it whilst doing a steady speed, it shows less than the speed shown on the speedo. Must pick up the info from somewhere else. I suspect it's more accurate than the speedo, in which case why not have an electronic speedo?
Average fuel consumption:- Lies. Cruising at 80mph shows average fuel consumption of 52.something. Working it out 'at the pump' shows average fuel consumption of 47.something. So that's more than 10% optimistic.
Range:- Lies, Even if you hold a steady speed, it ticks down faster than the miles go past. Even if you cane it and then start cruising, it ticks the mies down faster than they're going past.
Temperature:- Is probably within a degree or two.

On a new bike it's a £700 option I think (mine was an ex-demo model so fitted with all the toys), and frankly it's not even remotely worth it.

Not the computer no.

The big K's not been too bad in that respect, BMW seem to have sorted themselves out. Only a couple of fastners seem to be showing any major signs of corrosion. Mind I did liberally coat this one in ACF50 before the winter started last year.

AFAIR the option is only £115. Even if it did work OK though, I can't see any use in having it, unless it had an affect on resale.

Maybe I'm thinking of the ESA then - that's expensive but worth it. No matter what the cost, the computer isn't IMO.

agreed.

Ours hasn't got the computer gizmo (I don't think?) but it does have that stupid range countdown when you go onto "reserve". Last time I rode it I apparantly travelled 5 miles while traversing Petworth.

so far...my pooter seems to be bang on...
the range thing is fairly accurate (as a guide)
the temp thing agrees with my car and van so either it's right or all three are out!
and the av fuel comsumption also agrees with the maths if you can be bothered...
so...One happy BM owner...

It will pick up the data for average speed from the odometer, not the speedo. While they may work from the same cable they work in different ways. This is entirely normal.

Fuel gauge is wwaaayyyy more accurate than anything on earlier BMs. Auto tyre-pressure monitoring is cool, too. Read the pressures as you ride; it even signals an alarm if the pressure drops quickly - not always noticeable on a motorway, for example.
