Default My Pan european is broken!

Approaching a roundabut at the end of a dual carriageway and I pull in the clutch to change gear and it died! Coasted to a halt half way around the roundabout and it was well and truly dead. Called out the RAC, called home and tried the bike - it started! Hooray. Fiddle to put lid on and see how far I get when the bloody thing topples off the verge and lands on it's side. Broken RH mirror. Does anyone know how heavy a Pan European with full panniers and a top box is? Bloody heavy is how heavy! Thanks muchly to the nice man in an Audi who stopped to help me pick it up.

Anyway, about then Fate decided to kick me while I was down by raining on me! The RAC turned up earlier than planned as the nice man looking at bikes left the previous job early (another bike) as it was terminal and placed on a flat bed! We got mine going and got it to a local garage they use. I drove the rest of the way home in a P reg Mondeo with 130,000 miles on the clock! The current diagnosis is a knackered alternator so it's a case of getting hold of one, and fitting it. I then get to swap their Mondeo for a hopefully properly working Pan.

I'm miffed that there was no warning; no electrical problems, no problems starting or anything - the bugger just died on me.

Right, beer o'clock after all that.

I really hope thats a Honda mechanic cause otherwise its going to take them a long time and a lot of money to sort, would be hunting eBay as 1st stop for the alternator or David Silver spares, a new ones gonna be very expensive And by all accounts you get no warning when they go but sometimes people get ones that are a bit more reliable than others

My Blade copped out on me a couple of months back with a dodgy alternator .... really weird as I'd just ridden about 250 miles, bike running really well, stopped for a piss and the bike just wouldn't start again - symptoms were a flat battery . AA bloke charged it up, followed me 20 miles to a petrol station (expecting it to die any minute). Started fine after filling up (weird, AA bloke didn't think it would start) so he followed me a further 20 miles, stopped but left it running ....lights start fading, 'dashboard' disappears but comes back when revs increase .... managed to get home okay but bike then died completely just outside my garage.

Honda replaced it free of charge, even though the bike is out of warranty as it shouldn't have failed. dunno how old your Pan is (my blade is just over 2 yrs old) but if it ain't old maybe Honda will fix it for free. just a thought like.

The alternator on my 04 ZX10R runs at twice engine speed and uses the engine oil. When it expires it disintegrates and spews the resulting debris into the sump taking the engine with it.

Sounds like your alternator is an amateur jenkins.

Thankfully it seems to have afflicted our Transatlantic cousins rather than us.

Hope it stays that way.

Actually, it has done me well this last 21 months and 42,000 miles so something was going to go wrong sooner or later, (along with the chocolate exhaust that holed late last year).

Can you get alternators rewound? Might be cheaper than a new one.

IIRC there was a place in Southampton did them.
