Yup, google for the starter motor and alternator company in Plymouth, or there's somewhere on the Marsh Barton ind estate in Exeter that does it as well Jenkins.

And if you need to borrow a bike, let me know and I'll sort you out with one. It'll be a beemer but...

Is the battery actually flat?

Has it got one of those "angle of dangle" cut-outs that kill the ignition when the bike falls over?

I remember we've had problems on a couple of group events with those cutting the ignition on big Hondas for no reason. ISTR you can by-pass them with a judiciously placed paperclip but Honda aren't keen on telling you how.

Let me know how things are going re the course in a couple of weeks!

No. The bike would cut out. Leave it for 10 or 15 minutes and it would start, but just once and the lights (including the idiot ones) were very dim. If it didn't fire up first time it sounded as if the starter motor wasn't turning with sufficient oomph, and there was no way I was going to try bump starting it!

It does, but based on the above I don't think that's a factor.

I'll be ringing the garage this morning for an update and if necessary will get a van and bring the bike home and take it from there.

Dont know much about Pans. Has it got a alternator or a stator? If it has a proper alternator it may just need new brushes. If it is a stator it will no doubt need rewound and West Country windings will do it but they quioted me £90 for an R80 rotor so no idea what a wanda would cost.

I've seen the 'bike just died' from a faulty side stand cut-out switch.

However a flat battery and dim dash lights suggest that something in the charging circuit has given up the ghost. Don't presume to soon (by buying one) that it is 'the alternator'. Check out the battery, the regulator/rectifier first!

Can you get the make and model number off the alternator? All the TRC can then do a search and probably find it is used in the Honda Civic and is 1/3 of the price. Worth investigating.

Don't you have to drop the engine to do the alternators on those?

I don't think so - but it is not a quick job.

Hope that was replaced with stainless cause otherwise you'll be replacing it again within two years

Not if the mechanic knows what he's doing

Back of engine, almost level with the swinging arm, very tight fit

It is possible to change it with just removing the rear wheel, fender etc but small hands come in very handy to put it all back together

Indeed. Again the Honda OEM stainless was about half as much again as a pattern version.

Update on the alternator - it will be with a specialist Honda garage in Salisbury today, with a reconditioned alternator I sourced myself and should be back in my hands on Saturday. Turned into as bit of an epic this one!

Still hasn't spoiled my enjoyment of the bike though.
