Don't take this the way it's not intended, but is the bike making much of a difference to the way you ride?

You may want to check what sort of insurance premium you'll get as well. It might "help" your decision

What about a Bonneville (if you want to stay with Triumph)?

Should be ok. I have a protected no claims, and the lst two accidents went non-fault.

I really rate the 1200 Sportster. They handle great (yes really), the enigne's torquey and it's rapid up to about 80. It feels great and you don't have to ride fast on it to enjoy it.

I find them uncomfortable for distance though.

If I was trying to slow down I'd get a late two valve road orientated, unfaired BMW Boxer like a R100 Mystic or maybe a R80GS.

edit - oops, big pictures!

Lying outrageously on the internet since 2003

Sounds daft Trog but instead of a 1200 sportster, the new XR1200 looks a better bet if you went the Harley route.

+1

If, in some parallel (or should that be v twin?) existence, I was to become a Rhinestone Ploughboy thats the one I'd go for.

In the Bible, God made it rain for 40 days and 40 nights. That's a pretty good summer for us in Wales. That's a hosepipe ban waiting to happen. I was eight before I realised you could take a kagoule off.(Rhod Gilbert)

Airhead boxer yes.

R65 NO, BMW's biggest failure. Had one from new, they're crap.

Hmm. I had an R80 ST and loved it. Also crashed it, though...

What about a Ducati. Never had one of them.

My Dad has had his from new, (1981 I believe).

IIRC the ONLY thing that ever went wrong with it was the exhausts rotting through. Since he managed to blag some stainless OE ones (from Germany direct) they've been utterly fine. Oh - and the clutch cable went recently. (probably from non-use).

Plenty fast enough for modern traffic (110ish) and handles fine, (if a touch oddly when compared to modern bikes).

He loves it - the only reason he doesn't ride it much now is that he's too weak to hold it up! (he's a little bloke anyway and he's now 79).

That's an idea. Try a new make...so of the reasonably mainstream:

KTM
Aprilia
Ducati
Harley/Buell
Cagiva
MV Agusta

I've had Honda, kawasaki, suzuki. yamaha, mz, triumph, moto guzzi, morini, bmw, bsa, norton...er...that's it I think.

Thats what I'm saying, R80 is prolly the best allround of the lot, very closely followed by R75/7 (a rare creature).

The R65 was designed with a completely different engine at a time when BMW didn't have the money to design a new engine and there were shortcuts. In top the R65 has a resonant vibration from about 65mph to around 85mph and more than 20 minutes at those speeds and I was ready to cut my own balls off they were aching so much. Even the R60 although down on bhp (but not torque) is much nicer to ride.
