In top the R65 has a resonant vibration from about 65mph to around 85mph and more than 20 minutes at those speeds and I was ready to cut my own balls off they were aching so much. Even the R60 although down on bhp (but not torque) is much nicer to ride.
I understood that was attributed to the Nikasil coating on the bores. (ie hitting the resonant frequency of the liner material).

It's not a huge issue though on a well maintained bike.

I had 1 from new, main dealer maintained, it was, a huge issue.

hmm - interesting.

My dad always said it was "there" - but not enough to stop him riding the bike or doing motorway miles.

In my personal experience the main dealers don't seem that good at things like balancing carbs/throttle bodies. Certainly my Rockster has always been smoother after I tweaked it myself, and I've read a lot of owners have had to specifically request the balancing be done during a service.

Put this in context.

First beemer R60/7, bought hardly run in (9K IIRC) had it almost 3 years, did 72K on it in that time and apart from normal wear not a single problem.

Bought an R65 out of the box.
Vibration, back to dealer.
Ignition failure, back to dealer, ignition replacement, comes out with more vibration than before.
Gearbox failure, dealer replacement, can't do anything about vibration.
Front brake jams causing crash, dealer haggles about replacing tank and panels, will get in touch with BMW GB about vibration.
2nd Ignition failure, BMW GB haven't got back to them about vibration, complete ignition system replacement.
After 9 months I was desperate to get anything else to ride.

Since owned an R80 but it was stolen after I'd only had it about a month and never found.

How about a bonnie/thruxton with a few trick bits?

Royal Enfield?

Or look at the new TMAX video, under 'scooter lovers anon' in the gallery.

Wethers Original anyone?

I really don't like those new Bonnies. I loved the old 650 T110s. But they were good because they were fast, loud, sexy and single-minded, which is pretty much all the things the new ones..er..aren't.

If I were to get a classic style Hinkley Triumph, it would be a Thunderbird Sport.

Multi as the all rounder I reckon. I like the look of the Griso, and if the Harley had a 20 litre tank it might be an everyday option (what are they doing building a motorcycle that will only do 75 miles between fill-ups*?)

*I know, they only do 50 miles between break downs etc

Took one of these out when they came out, the grunt is superb but I kept over reving the bugger as it tops out just as it should be getting really fun
