![]() SV650 and Fazer 6 don't really light my fire, and I found the Fazer surprisingly cramped when I borrowed one for a few days. | |

For your budget you could look at a Honda SLR650, I've owned two of these as short distance commuters over the years..They share the same engine as the Dominator (I've owned one of them as well) but if you look about you'll find they're cheaper for a newer one, also you could have a look at the Honda Vigor which is pretty much the same as the SLR but with a ikle light fairing. I never had any engine problems with the two SLR's or the Dominator, the SLR's are quite good fun and crash well ![]() !I believe MAC commutes on a the Vigor incarnation so it may be worth dropping a PM.. ![]() Edit: A quick search on biketrader and there are 5 Honda SLR 650's dotted about the country for sale at nearly bang on your budget. |

What about an Africa Twin? You'll only pick up a fairly old one for £1500, but they've got a bit more power than the transalps, good for bigger riders, and good for touring as well as commuting. Being a twin probably a bit nicer on the motorways than the single cylinder bikes. Seem to stand up to the winter quite well, and they hold their value well, so if you wanted to sell it for something else in the future you'd probably make your money back (perhaps make a profit if you get the right deal on the right bike). Tank range is also pretty good. Uses more petrol than an F650 and bigger though. If you're thinking of any of the honda trail bikes, have a look on Honda Trail Bike Forums - where you'll find info about common things to look out for when checking the bikes over. |

Seeing as no-one else has mentioned it, have a look at a Suzuki xf650 freewind. I've had mine for 6 years, only problem has been a short in the electrics which just needed a load of insulating tape to sort. Comfy to ride, enough poke to keep up with traffic and high enough to see over cars in traffic when filtering.
