Actually - 2-strokes can be tuned to be VERY torquey - on a par with a regular 4-stroke, and in some instances better.

If you don't make it necessary for them to rev highly, the fact that you get double the amount of power strokes per crank rotation and a reduction of internal moving parts makes them more efficient.

2-stroke as a technology has a dirty reputation (within government/enviromentalist circles) and it'lll be very tough to change it.
So does diesel. They seem to have managed with that in cars.

I see no reason why they can't do it if it is what is required.

But is it?

LCs were fantastic, I had 4 of them and a couple of RD400s and various MX bikes, but they ain't the easiest of things to ride though very rewarding when you get it right and the fuel consumption is pretty horrendous.

TBH - I don't understand how diesel is so popular - it's no cleaner than petrol emissions wise and although it's possibly more efficient (also cheaper to make), the extra gubbins required in the vehicle (stronger block, turbo etc) would surely make it not worth the effort...

50mpg rather than 35mpg (figures are for Mondeos) and a 2nd hand diesel costs much the same as a petrol car, at least it does at the end of the car market I'm at.

diesel doesnt make sense on many levels, not flammable maybe?

if enough peopel cry out for 2-stroke it'll be made whether its 'required' or not

I didn't either, but then I have always had the "joys" of shite old tech dervs.
Then I drove a modern one.
I much prefer my 2.2 Honda to any other engine I have driven before.

When you say "extra" gubbins, have you had a look at the average 1.8 litre petrol car these days? Most have a turbo to enable similar performance figures while not quite managing the same economy.
There isn't a lot in it.

Diesel two strokes are the most efficent engines in terms of power obtained per fuel burned, but the only things I know of that are currently using them are large ships.

Nowhere near as nice as the RD500 'artists impression' that they wheeled out last year.

In case you didn't notice I'm converting my KTM300 into a road bike, thats 300cc's of tuned off-road two stroke snarling beast with road wheels and brakes on. Should be nice

Fair point.

Mind you - if everyone were to give up the obsession with performance - petrol engines could be made efficient and simple again.
