I had a test ride on one of these the other day: www.vectrix.co.uk It was actually rather good. Decent enough handling, brakes, and performance at least up to 50mph. Super delicate throttle response, which surprised me a bit, since I'd expected the electric motor to be snatchy. And a novelty regenerating brake, which comes on when you roll the throttle backwards. I liked that - in fact I hardly used the actual brakes except when coming to a complete standstill. Would I buy one? Priced "from" £4,999, so, err, perhaps not. And the range is still practically only 50 miles or so, in spite of better battery technology. But at the right price, I'd certainly have one as a city commuter. |

Nice to see it finally make it onto the market but did it really need to be that huge?

It's supposed to do over 60 miles at a steady 25mph, so a practical range of 50 miles was my guess. At over 50 mph on a dual carriageway the indicated range fell to 29 miles! And it is pretty big, but they obviously felt their market wanted a larger scoot. It's got good luggage capacity, to be fair. |

The Vectrix is an excellent example of the first mover problem. Basically, it's technically obsolete. Current EV performance is something like 150 miles at 60, with 100 mph performance available. And by the time someone's productionised that, the performance will have jumped again. But actually, performance isn't the problem, it's the battery pack. That performance quoted above would cost £20 per week for five years, just for the cost of the batteries, regardless of whether the vehicles gets used or not. You can beat that commuting cross a city with an old VW Polo. What's needed is a different business model that doesn't require you to buy the battery pack. For this to work the batteries have to be totally re-cyclable and contain valuable materials. Watch that space! |

The idea of a 150mph electric bike just makes me laugh, a total waste of time.
