Default Honda XL600r

Found this bike for sale and it looks great imo.

Has anyone got any experience with these bikes? Its a D plate so its quite old now. It seems to be well looked after though.

Its got 40000 miles on it and on sale for £1000. Does that sound any good?

Chances are i wont be able to buy but just wanted to know what folks thought of the bike.

Soapry Tenner says it's actually a munter that's been badly painted black before offloading it. People do that you know, the Welsh muppet I bought my camper off didn't even clean the dirt off the wheels before painting them, just painted over it.

Need a ground anchor fitting within 30 miles of Ilford? PM me.

It has the RFVC motor in it, nice engine but expect the top end to be tired at 40k, more so if it hasn't had regular quality oil changes.
£1000 is top dollar for that bike, I'd pay maybe £600 assuming the motor wasn't too rattly.

Engine and chassis could well be very tired at 40,000 miles.

I recon £1K's too much.

I'd rather find a nice, low mileage one and pay £1500-odd.

Good hack, but don't get one for off-road use. They were dated when they were new.

So heavy it drops like a stone over jumps, it's a nightmare in ruts and is a pain if you're riding with people on newer kit. Peeps with water-cooled lighter kit can afford to potter and play, but on the XL if you're not spending enough time in 3rd gear it overheats like hell.

IIRC the tops ends on all old SOHC singles were getting a bit tired by 40k. Cam shaft runs in plain bearings too, again IIRC, which wouldn't make a top end rebuild any easier.

And twins (think 250G5 etc) and probably fours too...

Yup, on an RFVC engine the rocker cover and cylinder head are line bored and a matched pair. Valve clearances are adjusted through circular threaded covers - in 10k miles of abuse of my old XBR, I never managed to unscrew the seized covers . Remarkably, that engine is still going strong at 45000+ miles.

You'll find a lot of these type of bikes going for daft money particularly on e-bay.

I've been looking at big singles myself, the superior early Dominators seem to be fetching £800 - £1500 but they do seem to wear well and cover high mileages.

As the other posters have pointed out, this is an old bike that looks a bit tired and is way overpriced.
I purchased a lowish mileage, nice order, 2001 Suzuki DRZ400 with a spare set of motard wheels for the same money.

It really is loads of fun and I can highly recommend them.

One of the champions!!
