Default Carb cleaner?

I've done a very sensible thing and bought a knackered old car that hasn't been started for over a year. Funnily enough it doesn't go now and I suspect any fuel in the float chambers has evaporated and gummed everything up.

Is there a recommended carb cleaner I can spray to un-gum everything? Or are they all the same and I just pick the one with the prettiest packaging on the shelf?

It's got twin SU carbs, H6 type btw

Does it run at all or is there nuffin'?

If it runs any old carb cleaner may help. If it's bad it may be a carbys off, strip and soak job.

Doesn't start at all, and even after lots of cranking there wasn't much smell of petrol so I reckon the floats have stuck at the very least.

What do I soak the bits in?

I used vinegar with some success. Others have used coke (I tried and thought it was shit, there y'go).

There will probably be a load of green & brown shite in the float bowls, so remove them first and clean. If still no joy, submerge them in some vinegar for a day or two.

Really? I use petrol.

If I had all the money I'd ever spent on drink, I'd spend it on drink.

If you have CV carbs (which these are probably not) soaking them in petrol w/o removing the diaphragms, say, tends to feck them up. If you're sure there's absolutely no rubber or plastic parts that will be affected by petrol immersion then go for it. I realise that carbys will come into close contact with petrol but immersion is a different matter.

Fair point

If I had all the money I'd ever spent on drink, I'd spend it on drink.
