Hello ![]() Well, quick Gerald update... was called in yesterday for an consultation with another neurosurgeon. It's been decided that as Gerald is in an awkward place that this other guy will do the digging around as he's an expert in the riskier stuff. After a few weeks of waiting and counsultations I'm now going in on Tuesday. The gory details are as follows: In on Tuesday and will have a functional MRI scan. This is a funkier version of a standard MRI scan with disco balls and go-faster stripes. They scan blood flow around the brain in realtime as you respond to stiumuli so they can work out exactly which bits of the brain do what and where the borders are. In my case as my motor cortex is at risk, they'll presumably make my squeeze my hands or make some movements and then try to work out exactly where the motor cortex is. This will give them more of an idea of how to attack Gerald as he's within a couple of millimetres of this area at most. Then a biopsy on Weds. This will be under general and they'll take the full chunk of skull out in anticipation of the full op to avoid cutting in twice. This will be something like a 6" disc of head. They'll do the biopsy and then screw the skull back in (almost Cranial Screwtop ), holding it in place with some sellotape or perhaps gaffa as I'm going private. Then the op on Friday for which I'll have the pleasure of being fully conscious while they dig around. This is so that I can respond to them testing which bit is safe to cut into and will lessen the chance of them accidentally cutting off motor power to the right side of my body. As I mentioned before, this is my favourite side out of all of them so I'm keen they keep it going as I was using it. Then another week or so in hospital to give me a better chance of chatting up some nurses, followed by somewhere between a few weeks and several months convalescing - probably at my parents' for a bit then at home as soon as I have the energy to escape. This is all assuming everything goes tickety boo and that Gerald is benign.. otherwise there'll probably be some radiotherapy and more forms to fill in. So there we go. 160Gb iPod has been ordered, need to go pyjama shopping tomorrow. I hope I haven't baffled you all with too much medical terminoloy, I've tried to keep it simple for you poor laymen where possible |

Ask them if they could fit a hinge to the bit of skull. Would be an ace talking point/party trick to show off at parties once Gerald's fucked off. ![]() Best of luck with it all chap and hope that it all goes as straightforward as possible. |
| In the Bible, God made it rain for 40 days and 40 nights. That's a pretty good summer for us in Wales. That's a hosepipe ban waiting to happen. I was eight before I realised you could take a kagoule off.(Rhod Gilbert) | |

Good luck dude. Your attitude towards it all is really amazing, and brilliant to see. I wish you nothing but the best for next week - p.s. it'll take forever to fill the 160GB...still doing mine now 4 weeks later...
