Default A Night of Heroes: Military Awards

War heroes meet celebrities. Maybe it's just me but is all this really necessary? Simon Cowell FFS.
Tonight on ITV at 21:00

"A Night of Heroes: Military Awards
In front of a royal audience, Phillip Schofield and Amanda Holden host an award ceremony from the Imperial War Museum acknowledging selfless and brave acts by members of Britain's armed forces. Stars from the world of entertainment and sport - including Simon Cowell, Ross Kemp, Jeremy Clarkson, Myleene Klass, Al Murray, John Terry and Kelly Holmes - come together to celebrate the bravery of service personnel across 10 categories. Now in its second year, the ceremony aims to highlight the high calibre of personnel and the achievements of the past 12 months, and also includes a further category for civilians who have provided support to the military"

The night? Yeah, fantastic idea to show the guys people appreciate their efforts and sacrifices.

The televising of it so the celebs can revel in their support? No, it's abhorrent.

Maybe they'll start a Celebrity X Hero. The public can vote on who they think has been the most heroic. Points given for the deed, they way they fall down, missing limbs and so on.

You couldn't write stuff like this if you tried.

As for the word 'hero' it's been debased by all the red tops.

Quick check reveals it is: "The Sun Military Awards"

There have been British Military heroes for a few hundred years. Some have been recognised and others haven't. I'm sure there'll be plenty of guys missed from this show.

Pity that only the recent campaigns will be recognised.

Yebbut. Wellington's too dead. The 'celebs' want to congratulate proper living heroes, standing in St. Paul's next to a tomb isn't such a fantastic photo-op is it?

I second what Adam said.

If it's so terrible, why do the 'heroes' take part?

Lying outrageously on the internet since 2002.

For the reason I stated.
Why shouldn't they get some recognition for their efforts and sacrifices?
Just the celebs shouldn't get extra publicity off the back of it IMO.

I really don't want to start backing Simon Cowell in the face of loads massive vitriol for the man. The 2008 X-Factor charity single did generate over a million quid for Help for Heroes though. And it's not like Cowell needs publicity.

Then why the need to televise it?

There's plenty of celebs that do loads for charities that don't publicise it.
I have no beef with the guy, and certainly never even implied he doesn't genuinely help out forces (and others) charities, but if you think that anything he does in the public eye is not at least partly for publicity you are very naive.

If it's about their achievements being recognised, it need to be communicated to the population in some way.

You can't have a TV programme without some TV people. I think the soldiers sould struggle to fill the time without them. Ok, they do seem to have rather a lot of Tv people but I imagine that's what the masses want these days and that's the way to reach a large audience.

It seems we want to glorify servicemen and women a lot these days for doing what they do. Long may it last I suppose but history and Rudyard Kipling would suggest it's only a passing phase.

"Oh, it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' 'Tommy, go away':
But it's 'Thank you, Mister Atkins,' when the band begins to play

This is all about TV. The achievements of our armed forces has always been recognised by Joe Public without the help of Amanda Holden's tits. It's not hard to cajole a bunch of servicemen into taking part in this sort of spectacle, it beats the fuck out of polishing a barrack room floor.
As for the squaddies filling out the time, my point is that the airtime wasn't necessary in the first place.
