Default Counterfeit money.

Where do i stand?

Monday night i get back from Halifax with a load of furniture etc from my (now in a care home) nans flat in a removals truck behind me. I have to pay the balance of the removal, £520, and have to pay it in cash with money that i withdraw from my nans PO account whilst they unload. I give them 6 £50's and the rest in £20's, i get a receipt for the money and off they go. Today i get a call from the removals company to say that one of the £50's is counterfeit and can i pay them £50 by card over the phone. They have sent me a proof of this from the bank on email, and i believe them, that one of the notes they paid in was counterfeit. However, who's to say that is one of my £50's, or that one of the guys doing the removal didn't swap it out?
Where do i stand oh wise ones?
And before someone says it's only £50 pay them, it's my nans money, and she's already being bled dry by the state.
Cheers
Mitch

If you got the money straight from the PO / a bank, it sounds like they're trying it on.

Most removal men are pikey sorts IME.

Not sure about the law but I'd guess you're not obliged to do anything. You could even report it to the police yourself as it sounds like they're being dishonest.

You could phone the bank, tell them whats happened (the money came from them) and see what they say.

If the bank sais all notes are checked then tell the Removal men that they should take it up with the bank.

I'd say they need to check the money before they left. The transaction was complete, you recieved a reciept which confirmed they accepted and were satisfied with the payment.

I hope you like saaaaand...

Can you ask them for the £50 back so you can have it "independantly verified" and then pass it onto some other sucker?

<edit>Damn good wheeze though, I have a mate who does removals. A fake bank letter and he could get an extra £20 or £50 on every cash job he does. Excellent.

Just an apology " Look I'm sorry if I have done this but I drew the money from the bank on X-day in good faith and too much time has passed to correct the problem now."

Unless it's a mate it's tough shit IMO. They wanted cash, they got cash and it's up to them to check it there and then or take some other payment.

You know the source of the money and can verify that. You have a receipt for the transaction which puts you in the clear. You do not need to take it any further IMO.

Cheers guys, that's mainly what i thought. I have contacted the PO, just no reply yet, i'm sure they are going to tell me 'tuff shoite', so i guess i'll pass it along. I do feel for the removals lot, as it's a small family firm but hey ho they could have waited till Tuesday for a card payment, but wanted paying on the Monday upon delivery.

They might say: "You are charged with passing forged currency."

Anyone know where to get this counterfit money?

I quite fancy travelling through the far east, fleecing the street money changers and moving on sharpish each time.

In which case they'd have a field day in M&S Moorgate and their fake £1 coins.

The bank will have confiscated the £50 note, that's why they are miffed, and what's to say the note came from Mitch, it could have been from anyone.

The proof is non existant. Again, fromage dur innit.
