An idea, nothing to do with TRC
You lot are a set of hard nosed cynics valuable resource of constructive criticism. So I have an idea to run passed you all, don't worry it has buggar all to do with TRC.
This morning I was on my way to work thinking about the fact that I, and seemingly quite a few other people, am tired of seeing manufactured tunes in the Christmas number one slot. For the last few years this, for reason better known to somebody else, holy grail chart position has been dominated by the likes PopXIdolFactor tunes.
So, why not use the power of the anonymous masses on the internet to change all that, and put a hole in the "business plans" of the record companies.
The idea being, setup a site where from now until the 13th December visitors can vote from a list of 10 songs, on the 13th the votes are totalled and every voter gets an email telling them which tune won - it is up to them to go out and buy/download that song during the following week (16th to the 21st December)
If enough people do this, we will knock the winner of this years PopXIdolFactor off the top spot, job done.
The 10 songs in the voting list are:
Here are the songs!
1) Redemption Song — Bob Marley
2) I Heard It Through the Grapevine - Marvin Gaye
3) The Winner Takes It All - ABBA
4) Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
5) Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give you Up
6) Common People — Pulp
7) Bing Crosby - White Christmas
8) Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
9) Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
10) Imagine - John Lennon
These were selected more or less at random so feel free to suggest better ideas

Rickroll the Xmas No1 slot. Couple of years late but it could be a winner.
I'd invest anything up to 29 pence in the scheme.

No idea, but enough people tell enough people about it then it has to be in with a shot.
Can't find anything on google for total sales for last years number one
EDIT:
From Wikipedia for lasts years number one
Burke's version broke a European sales record after selling over 105,000 digital downloads in just one day, breaking the previous record set by Leona Lewis. It sold 576,000 copies in its first week, becoming the fastest selling single released by a woman in the UK, to become the Christmas number one, while Buckley's cover came second and Cohen's original version came thirty-sixth. On 28 December, 2008, the UK Singles Chart listed Burke's version as #1 biggest selling single of the year.[21][22], with NME announcing sales of over 1 million copies since its release.[23] Burke's version of the song is the seventh best-selling download of all time in the UK.[24]
So in answer to your question, shit loads - there must be a whole untapped market of PopXIdolFactor naysayers out there.

Should Get Out More
Re: An idea, nothing to do with TRC
That requires a huge amount of trust in the users. If I voted for a number 1 and it didn't win then why would I go out and spend money on a track I didn't want?
It might work if you got the publicity but it seems a bit a lot of effort to prove a point, is Zanx involved in this?

I would be up for it but never bought a record in years and dont know what to do. Do you still get 7" singles?

Because it isn't about buying a track that you want, its about knocking a manufacturer PopXIdolFactor off the number one spot.
Publicity would help, but that isn't going to happen - so it will rely on the facetwitter generation to spread the word.

Re: An idea, nothing to do with TRC
Wasn't this tried and failed last year with Jeff Buckley only reaching number 2?

Perhaps we could set up a xidolfactor website asking those who like xidolfactor to vote for who they think should be no.1. We tally up the votes on the 13th and then spend the 14th to the 25th going round killing all the people that voted thus improving the gene pool, raising the collective intelligence of the country and curing the housing problem.

Cool idea I have to say.
"Redemption Song — Bob Marley" ... should get a length of rope thrown over a sturdy rafter in a few households.

Re: An idea, nothing to do with TRC
Nice idea but the masses appear to like the manufactured stuff. Getting the word around would be difficult as you are after attracting people who would not normally be attracted by shiny stuff.
If it was looking like being successful it would become a news story and the record companies would want ot get involved. Plus someone would have to pay for the bandwith of the site.
Plus I'm not that keen on your list.
