Impressed with School
I dropped my daughter off at school this morning and then she realised she had forgotten her book bag and it is a library day. I only live round the corner so I cycle home and got it for her.
When I went into class I noticed today they had a student teacher a clssroom assistant and the regular teacher moving round small groups working at about 6 tables.
There are about 27 in the class so the ratio today is one adult to 9 children. When I briefly went to prep school the ratio was allways about 1:12 and thats about it at my brothers kids expensive private school.
So this is only one indicator but I know there are allways at least 2 adults in the class and often some sort of "learning co ordinator as well. This seems a much better ratio than when I was at state school with about 1:30 not uncommon.
Generally this fits in with my overall impression that standards are higher than when I was at school.
Obviously this isnt going to make the front page of the Daily Mail but bearing in mind we are probably a nation of negative moaners I am still interested in what other peoples recent experiencs of state school as a parent or pupil has been.
BTW I have said elsewhere I am mildly dyslexic so if anyone wants to correct anything in terms of spelling and grammar go ahead.

Teacher? Student teacher? Classroom assistant?
One of them had to be quite fit, surely

Re: Impressed with School
This is the time of year (in bristol anyway) that trainee teachers get placements at schools as part of their course AFAIK.
Most of the schools i visit have as you mention, 1 teacher, an LSA and a student at the moment, which can only be a good thing.

Re: Impressed with School
They've got to have 2 teachers + classroom assistant.
The classroom assistants there to take the bullet/knife
whilst the spare teacher phones the police and the other teacher
evacuates the classroom

My thinking and teachers I believe are allot better paid than they were when I was at school. That inevitably should nave raised the standard. My experience is that they are of a better calibre than mine were.

Been very impressed with Ricky's school since I took over his care. They've gone out of their way to ease the transitional period along.
Also seem very keen on involving the kids in extra-curricular activies (snorkelling lessons and rugby in Rick's case).
Very impressed.

Re: Impressed with School
The bit you missed when you cycled home was the teacher beting seven bells of shit out of your daughter for forgetting her bag. The CAs are there to hold the kids down whilst the beatings are being adminstered.

Should Get Out More
Re: Impressed with School
You're obsessed with school & schooling because you have the I'm-not-thick-I'm-dyslexic disease? That's my theory.

Luckily my daughter went to canonbury school where boris took his kids.
She then however ended up at highbury school .where it happened a fair bit stuff like Two wankstas walking into the classroom pick up a chair each ,chuck it through a window and calmly walk out.
in front of a whole class and the teacher who did'nt even raise an eyebrow.

I used to work at withywood sec where they would do similar. I was in a ground floor ICT suite once where the kiddie got so irate that the teacher wouldn't let him out of the room (he was kicking off), that he got a chair, threw it threw a window and walked out of it, while muttering "i'm off down the pub to get my parents", it was 11:45am...
They also used to smash projectors off the ceilings with chairs, tbh, i think they used to do everything but actually sit on them and do work...

My daughters at Grassmere and I am hoping she will get into Stoke Newington.
So I am talking primary school at the moment but when i was at comp no one actually hospitalised anyone else I seem to remember but some nasty kids cut the head of the school goose with a spade. Some others just after they left hung around at the school gates with sme clubs with nails in to get revenge on one of the teachers.
