I suspect that the point of the show is not entertainment, but to show how barbaric the death penalty is - do we really want it here, or is it just something that people think they want?

It will be. When someone is found to have abused children in a new and horrible way the standard response will take over.

Problem with having the death penalty for things like that (rape included) is that the perp does the act then figures that they are going to die if they are ever caught anyway and kills the victim hoping to hide the evidence.

Means the victims more likely to be killed.
