Maybe it's just got a flat battery?
Sould point out that the starter clutch can't slip like a clutch-clutch, so unless you heard the 'tap-tap-tap-tap' you get from the starter when the battery's dead, the starter is probably fecked too.

Re: Water damaged engine?
I've only seen two hydraulic locked engines, one cracked head, one with bent con-rod. Hope that helps!

And don't forget to bitch and moan when your next renewal comes in or the insurance co. give you a really hard time if you have to make a claim.

it's alright he's in the caribean or colombia or somewhere.
No need to declare that on insurance when back home, surely.

Re: Water damaged engine?
Its fucked.
I took the plugs out and got the water out (the cylinders were full) but it still won't turn over.
No water in the sump, so maybe its bashed a valve and seized?
My only option now is let it all dry out and claim ignorance.

That's very bad. I agree with your "fucked" diagnosis

Does your insurance cover accidental damage like this? Does the hire company have insurance to cover it but it's not offered to the customer? If so, can they be encouraged to make a claim instead of getting it from you?

If the cylinders were full of water, it'll have more than a broken valve....as I'm sure you know, engines work by going "suck-squeeze-bang-blow" - have you ever tried to squeeze water?

Should Get Out More

I'm in that part of the Venn diagram marked 'no' and 'better things to do'.

Nope. I'm a dunce when it comes to physics/mechanics/hydraulics - is water used in hydraulics as I always thought special hydraulic fluid was used?Genuinely interested, btw.

Re: Water damaged engine?
Of course you can compress water a little. Just not nearly as much as air. Sounds like it is well and truly fucked.
As I get older I'm increasingly finding honesty's the best policy ... but if they're going to rip you off as a result I'd be tempted by the making it look like it's been stolen strategy.
I think you'll be hard pushed to remove all traces of the incident and you can't drive it back to the hire company and surely getting it towed there in the middle of the night is not without risk.
I'd either go with honest or two it somewhere remote and fuck the door and igntion lock (unless it's one of these new, unstealable cars).

How did you get the water out if it wont turn over? is the starter turning the engine over, it may just need the electrics drying out, have you checked all the fuses?
