Some time in December I should have a few bob from the bursaries, and possibly a rent rebate. I'm considering getting a car. Selection needs to be a step-into rather than down into (standing back out on bad leg can be difficult). Budget only a grand, plus a couple of hundred for insurance. It seems that 10-12 year old Ford Galaxies are going to meet all requirements. Are there any issues with that kind of car that I should be aware of? Anything major that needs to be done at certain mileages? Generally decent or to be avoided? Also, any other recommendations for models to look into? Cheers folks. |

There is a galaxy owners forum if you have a quick google. there are many many things that can go wrong with them* but.. I bought mine as a non runner for £150 and then after a few fixes towed two bikes 10,000 miles with it, lived in it, took it offroad (by mistake) and had it buried to the driveshafts before being dragged out by a farmer (grr shatnav). sat out on the drive now with a ton of gear in it and will continue piling miles onto it, in all this time I've changed a couple of fuses and re soldered some connections in the rear tailgate. I'm quite attached to my 'Bessie' now but shes a girl with a thirst (I have a 2.0 petrol with 140,000 miles on it) getting about 30mpg on a run and lord knows what on the short runs. 1860kgs of wallowy handling loveliness she's very very quiet on a run though, a younger model would be even better * ecu can get knackered from water ingress to cab £800, relays go (relay 33 IIRC) £45 among other things |

If I Recall Correctly. Wife's cousin had a Galaxy and said he'd had to send a lot on it at every service IIRC. I think that was at the main Ford agent. |

Diesel variants are bestest. Avoid the 2.3 V6 unless you're rich. Man can they guzzle petrol! |
