Stuff like this is not uncommon around the schoolboy scrampling scene. Perhaps because people aren't spunking megabucks on the bikes, entries, tyres, practice days etc. Or perhaps because they all seem to have scrap iron businesses with the van on the books as a company vehicle and paid for by the taxman

The added benefit of that size is that most people will already have the 7.5T category on their licence so are permitted to drive them. Some of those big American buggers need a Class 2 licence to drive them. Fortunately Spitfire and I both have that extra category. Hopefully I'll have me' Class 1 before too long so a 5th wheel jobbie will be another option for us (even though affording one is a different kettle of fish altogether! )

How about one of these bastards?!! (Admittedly it would appear not to be a 5th wheel proper but I'll bet it needs a Class 1 licence).

This, however, is definitely a 5th wheel jobbie.

You could get one of these instead. Saves towing your car.

Fucking about with the clean and black tanks is a pain in the arse and not a pleasant job, and really you shouldn't have either with any contents when on the move, so it's not all simple as pull up and chill. You'll need access to a stand pipe to fill the clean tank properly, flush through the pipes, and to activate any chemicals in the black tank.
Then when finishing you'll need a drain to empty the black, plus a standpipe to flush through from clean to black, then to flush the black again before dumping some more chemicals in ready for the time it'll be stood.

Anything bigger than a tiddler will require levelling with feet too. Some self-level but most 'affordable' (relative term) ones don't.

But that said, the luxury and space they afford you makes such things mere inconveniences to top and tail your break.

Eccles - if you buy used you can get cheaper but of course then it's decorated to someone else's taste (often not very good taste), and has the mileage already on - but still, some bargains to be had.
Always spotting them in AutoSport magazine's classified section.

Used was what we were looking at - do they accept buttons and pocket fluff as payment in Autosport? That's all we have ATM!

My dad has been an avid fan of the motorcaravan since the late 1970s.

His first one was a vegetable van, which he converted. Following that, he had a Auto-Sleeper running on a Bedford CF250. I cut my teeth on mechanics on that one. He sold it 5 years ago and bought a brand new 03 Pug based 4 berth. Cant remember who the coach builder is.

I miss the bedford though. PLenty of fun family holidays in that van. When my Dad part ex'd it, the dealer sia dit was the finest example he had ever seen

I did about 4 caravan shows in my youth with my dad.

I am always shocked by how much the VW bus based campers are. Rip off IMO

There were a couple of motorhomes at the NEC show which you could park a Smart car right inside the back of in a purpose built garagette under the living area.

Wonder what's worse, having a caravan or owning a Smart (sic) car?

Would be lovely to afford £20k on a pukka camper, but some of use have to make do with converted Spazvagens.

I ripped out about half a tonne of excess weight today, remanants of the disabled lift, the kitchen units that were meant for a house and weighed about 60kg, the grabrails were another 10kg, all in a desparate attempt to get the mpg up from dismal to really bad.

Why anyone would tour the UK in a full size Winnie is beyond me.

Can I ask how many hotel nights the cost of a camper would buy?

Think I'll stick to my tent when I want to camp, and hotels when I dont. Unless someone can indicate that I'm wasting money. Having spent time in a caravan, I was very glad I hadnt paid for it, ended up thinking its not much more comfy than camping in a tent, without the feeling that you're really mastering the outdoors.
