No, not dog pr0n. Just watched this on BBC1. Absolutely disgusted at the arseholes who run some of the dog breed societies - some advocating culling puppies who don't fit the 'breed standard', and others who encourage breeding from animals with known defects. And the twats in charge of the Kennel Club are just as bad with their sanctimony. Although I was surprised to see that the chief vet at the RSPCA, who was totally opposed to it all, was none other than Mark "A bike is born" Evans. |

I didn't see anything new here. All the arguments are old. There just isn't the will amongst the clubs, breeders, associations or government to affect a change. Shame |

| It was. Seeing images of dogs having epileptic fits, of inherited disorders, of dogs who cannot breathe properly, or give birth normally, is bad enough. To know that it's all due to humans wanting them that way to get them to 'show standard' makes me wonder just what happened to these people's sense of morality.

I was surprised to see how a pug looked in 1880 compared to today, looked like a different dog. The boxer having fits was heartbreaking, surely its kinder ti put him to sleep? Mick |

The early bulldog looked very similar to an American pit bull , a much longer muzzle and way more manouverable , the reason being is that they where actually used for something to do with bulls and needed to be able to move fast , the current breed couldnt outmanouver a hoover BAN the breeds that have problems = sorted |

It was pretty grim watching. I was especially appalled by the woman who bred Cavalier King Charles spaniels from a dog that she knew had syringomyelia, against the vet's advice. 30 odd litters, too, so there are potentially hundreds of puppies with this serious illness. And, that sick dog won best of breed... ![]() I've long been disgusted by the Kennel Club and the old fogeys that run it and continue to ruin the dogs in their quest of 'perfection', when this quest results in serious genetic conditions and discomfort for the dogs, e.g., the German Shepherd. According to the KC, the GSD should have a sloping lower back, instead of the straight one it's had from day 1, and not be able to walk properly as a result. |

| It was very selective (comparing the Kennel club to Nazi ethnic cleansing) but is some very bad publicity for the kennel club, I think they will be changing some of their small print after that.

Of course nobody mention the hypocrisy of the Beeb for making this programme and also allowing a week's worth of prime time viewing for Crufts each year. I have asked them whether they see a contradiction in this, we shall see if I get a response. |

Bulldogs, German Shepherds, Labradors to an extent, Cavaliers, Shar-peis (a terrible breed!), Dachshunds, Westies, just about every breed has its problems. Not all of those problems would be simple to eradicate without wiping out the breed, and some of the problems would not justify that extreme a solution (though some would). Many of them have been tolerated by the Kennel Club but that organisation is beginning to change its tune. Cats are less of a problem, though some exotic breeds have major hereditary diseases. The vast majority of moggies are some sort of mongrel though, and the better for it. | |
