I have asked them whether they see a contradiction in this, we shall see if I get a response.
Amazing. It's called balanced representation. The BBC simply can't win. If they only showed anti-Kennel Club programming they'd be rightly criticised for bias.

And in case you hadn't realised, not everyone agrees that selective breeding is wrong so why would the BBC not show something that millions of people think is perfectly acceptable?

Many of them have been tolerated by the Kennel Club but that organisation is beginning to change its tune.
The small clip I saw on the news had the kennel club boyo stating they were actively identifying breeding faults and working to eradicate the problems.

Judging by the programme, I'd say ass-covering.

And there is a rumour that the BBC may drop Crufts unless 'changes are made'.

Best quote of all was when the interviewer was asking a breeder about allowing a dog to mate with its own offspring to preserve 'purity'...

"Do you have a daughter?"
"Yes."
"Would you sleep with her?"
"No, of course not." (He wasn't from Norfolk or Austria)
"But it's ok to allow your dog to do it?"
"Totally different."

To be fair you'd cut the bollocks of your dog but not your son.

But the whole thing did seem pretty cruel though and needs a few rules and some common sense.

Ok, i've just stayed up far too late to watch this on BBCI and i'm shocked, horrified and genuinely upset.
I'm not a dog owner and have no knowledge of breeding dogs but if the very basis of this documentary is true (that desirable traits are inbred into dogs despite the risk of hereditary disease also being transferred) then it's a very sad and disgusting thing indeed.

For an owner to knowingly produce a litter of pups from a brother and sister to ensure a glossy coat, yet also know that the pups WILL contract a condition which leaves them twitching, urinating and whimpering on the floor with no control (as long as they're ok in show) is just heartbreaking.

Sad day for dogs.
Or, maybe not......

sorry-the same 'compare & contrast' shots appear in both papers. Except the Sun cropped its online one to remove the handler.

You do have to laugh at the inconsistancy of the public though...the BBC are thinking of dropping crufts because the treatment of show dogs is 'seen' to be cruel. Yet the same people will happily scoff down chicken, beef, pork etc. that's been subjected to exactly the same kind of breeding manipulation.

It was.

One of the reasons I like akitas is because they are one of the few breeds that haven't been fucked about with.

In fact, if anything, they are now more genetically diverse than they were 60 years ago.

IMHO opinion, the one from 1946. I do hope the other one isn't yours, because I would hate to offend you and I do know that you are one of the good guys.

I watched this in horror. There were many examples of what I would call "bad breeding" in some of the "top dogs" but the worst IMO was the German Shepherds at Crufts - they looked positively deformed alongside their working counterparts.

If I had all the money I'd spent on drink....I'd spend it on drink

Thank you! Crumbs, no it isn't-although I must say IMO I, to a large extent & on that one visual, like it a lot. Now, one of the many side effects of the business 39-45 was to virtually bring down a lot of pedigrees to very low numbers indeed, so thanks must go to those people who helped keep the breeds going. The consequence then is that there wasn't a great deal of stock to work with (the consequences of this are of course knocked on) & hounds were mostly as packs. IMO the '46 is on visuals, lacking. But back then it was prolly all they had. Fab that Akitas are that diverse. What were they outcrossed to in the last 60 years to create this?

Have a look here - it will give you some idea as to why the akita genetics are so diverse.

As well as that, the akitas that were brought to the US after the war were bred to Malamutes/Huskies etc in an effort to keep the genes healthy.

So the akita is effectively one of the most ancient dogs and one of the most modern ones at the same time.
