Went to Silverstone today for the GP circuit... First real time i've been there as the only other time was rained off...

Went to Silverstone today for the GP circuit... First real time i've been there as the only other time was rained off due to being on slicks.

The R1 was given a double bubble screen last night for the expected wind-blast at a VERY fast circuit, only today would i find out it was a moment of genius and it REALLY worked well.

GiantPygmy was my riding buddy and van buddy today, him in Novice, me in Inters.

Arrived and i wasn't put in Inters, i was put in fast !!!! oh shit... hey ho.. lets go out and see...

Down the hanger straight on the 2nd sighting lap i had 153mph on the clocks and was losing ground dramatically to the bike around me.... who in the next 4 corners just buggered off and i was left in no doubt i was WAY out of my league... gone are the days of FAST and Weeksy ever even being remotely related :)

So after a drop to inters.. i felt much better.. but still no concept at ALL of where Silverstone went... left, right.. errrrrm no idea !!! For those who don't know, the GP layout is the longest on the MotoGP calander. At almost 4.5 miles in length and it must be 20 corners, it's a LONG lap. Found myself throughout the day getting my head around it slowly, slowly slowly. On there you hit in excess of 140mph 3 times per lap, over 150 once per lap... it's just a FAST place. But it's WEIRD... the track is just SO damn wide, you can sometimes lose track of where you are and where you need to be. In some ways, at my level, half the Apex's barely exist as you're about 25m from them as your turn in point is over the other side, it's leading onto a fast sweeper, so the apex simply doesn't exist.
It's great though in the way if gives you the oppertunity to experiment with lines and where you wanna be on the track.

Some of the corners are fast 100mph+ sweepers... scary being cranked over on a bike i've never ridden before in anger !!!!

The brakes on the R1 are just superb... really firm, sharp and responsive.

Handling was also super, everywhere i wanted the bike to go, it went there. Awsome. It was a touch flighty on the Hanger straight, but as it's a right/left flick and 100mph going up to over 150mph hard on the throttle you can forgive the bike getting a little loose.

As for me... jesus... i've TOTALLY lost any abilty/speed i ever had on a bike.... the R1 was compensating for my lack of abilty by being a bloody missle out of corners and rocketing down the straight bits. My cornering, braking and general riding was just weak... i was in some ways disappointed in myself.. but also having WAY too much fun to care.

The bike performed faultlessly, doing back to back sessions all day with riders in Inters and Novice..

FWIW... i STILL love the R1 :)

Historically, when ever I've not used the RS, it's been outside under cover.
Went to the bike on a glorious hot sunny day, to find the cover - floppy with the heat - sagging onto the bike as if it was made of cloth. (It's fabric-backed plastic of some description), and just thought "hot weather = soft plastic. Fine.

Pulled the cover off a while later, to find the liner shredding from the inside of the cover, stuck to the screen. Spent hours today turning the bike into a pile of bits, each of which I meticulously cleaned, before reassembling the bike. Went to clean the screen today, to get that crappy cotton stuff off of it, and it will.not.come.off

I've tried hot water and washing up liquid, I've tried WD-40, I've tried petrol, I've tried soft cloths, elbow grease, out of desperation I even tried scotchbrite (plastic scoury thing), and it will not come off! It's a dapply cotton pattern along the top 6th of my screen and it's bloody annoying. I've got the thing soaking in the bathroom sink at the minute to get the shite off, maybe it needs a good soak? I'm not going to put it in the dishwasher, cos it'll just change shape and never go back on the RS properly.

Anyone got any ideas?

PS: Anyone know how to polish scratches out of screens, or how to just polish screens in general? I've took the finish off a tiny bit with the scotchbrite.

I genuinely don't see the logic behind this. A biker who was riding on the correct side of the road was struck by a lorry that had partly crossed the central white line, and lost his leg. A court has determined that it was the biker's fault.

Please help me see where this is right.

Look, I know it might just be me, I'm getting to that sort of age when 'things were better when I was a yoof', but...

Look, I know it might just be me, I'm getting to that sort of age when 'things were better when I was a yoof', but being as objective as I can I really don't think so. But I'm getting the increasing impression that there are more cocks out there on bikes than there used to be - or rather they're not on bikes, having decided to perform impromptu dismounts and decorate the scenery. A little background......

I started riding in the mid 80s and used to ride out a lot to places / routes with a high concentration of bikes - race meetings, popular roads, meeting points etc. in the north and midlands. Now there were plenty of fast bikes around in the 80s and early 90s, not all of which handled that well, and insurance / finance was pretty cheap, meaning that some young blades got some very fast bikes. I honestly can hardly remember ever coming across the scene of an off. There obviously were some but it wasn't like a regular thing.

So cut now to today. I had a break from riding in the late 90s and noughties so when I'm out and about now the contrast is maybe more apparent than to those who have seen it evolve slowly. It really seems to me that in the summer time I'm seeing a really high number of spills. I hardly ever go out on routes which are popular with bikes on summer weekends without seeing the evidence of a recent bike crash. In almost all cases (where persons are still on site) it appears to involve white male riders in one-piece leathers riding large capacity new sportsbikes with at least one other friend. Seldom do other vehicles seem to be involved, it's generally a case of loss of control on a bend / roundabout - one presumes through speed which is too high for the rider's ability (though probably not for the bike's capabilities).

The point is, this fits exactly with the statistics which plod etc. are quoting as 'the problem'. Much as it pisses me off to see yet more speed cameras, more speed limits, more unmarked plod cars etc. targetting bikers, I have to say that if I was in their shoes - with a duty to try and reduce the carnage / expense / disruption caused by this mayhem - I'd probably be doing what they are doing. Everybody moans about the increase in hassle but if these cocks would learn how to ride within their capabilities and stop treating the roads like a trackday they would be doing us all a favour.

I might add that I like to get a shift on myself, and I am also a sportsbike riding knob, but these plonkers are beginning to get on my tits.

So who are these people? Is it just a co-incidence, am I chancing across good riders who are simply making unfortunate mistakes wot any fule could make? Or is there a growing demographic of cocks on bikes? Are there really more accidents involving these people that hitherto - do the stats support this?

Or am I just getting old and grumpy :listen:

Up until now I've always had good customer service from HG. However, my Aplinestars SMX5 Waterproof boots developed a leak after 7 months. Receipt was produced in the shop and I was initially told the boots would need to be sent away for testing. Clearing this was impractical as I was wearing them at the time. After a lengthy debate the manager he agreed to exchange them, but all the ones in the shop in my size were reserved for other customers!
Anyhow, after a two week wait I finally got them swapped over, but man alive, the attitude from the staff. It was like I'd perpetraited the greatest fraud ever and they knew I was lying but they just couldn't prove it.

Just about to join the Hammersmith flyover going into town so of course I bypass the HUGE queue in the outside lane, bypass the cheeky fuckers trying to cut in at the last minute and cut in at the last second on the FireBlade. I'm in no rush so rather than nip in front of the last car before the coned off section, I duck in behind him. At which point for no particular reason, he hits the brakes. I hit my brakes and the lady behind me doesn't, at least not in time to avoid clouting me up the rear.

I manage to stay on and miss the car ahead which has now speeded up again. In fact because he had left quite a bit of space in front, he's fucked off a bit sharpish but it's a single lane now and he's going nowhere. Bike feels ok, I look back at the driver who's hit me and she waves apologetically but is also trapped in the single lane so I nip up ahead into the gap, park the bike and check it out quickly. All ok. Lady behind is ok so I wave not to worry, give and recieve a thumbsup and catch up to the car whodunnit.

Now I couldn't work out at the time whether he's thought I was going to pass him and braked to give me room or (more likely) tried to fuck me up by braking unexpectedly when he saw me cutting in behind. I check him out as I pass him but get blanked so put it down to experience and head off.

I thought it was worth sharing because it might be something to look out for. On balance I suspect it was deliberate but since it would be my fault if I hit him, there's not much to do except be wary of similar situations...

Female Biker (with bike) wanted- Charity ride in September

As some may know I do a charity ride every year. I've not done it for a few years as the organiser has been otherwise...

As some may know I do a charity ride every year. I've not done it for a few years as the organiser has been otherwise engaged.

Well this year she has decided to do it again. It's an all female bike ride from Edinburgh to Cardiff, avoiding motorways, over three days stopping off at various sights along the way and collecting money en route. This year we'll be raising money for Marie Curie as one of our members died this year from Cancer and Marie Curie was looking after her and her family right to the end.

I'm the lead marshal and I need female marshals. You need to have a bike and be confident in your riding as there is a lot of running around to do keeping them all together. Will be using the marker system this year but it's only the marshals that do the marking as some of the members of the group are not too confident on a bike (and that's being kind). Also, trying to teach the marker system to someone who barely knows their bike is, well, quite frankly not a task I want to take on. So the Marshals alone will be doing all the marking.

We have had male bikers in the past as marshals but to be honest all they've done is show off doing wheelies and generally riding like twats! I've had nothing but complaints from the women when we have men on board. I'm not saying I won't accept offers from blokes, we do actually have an ex copper as one and he is brill, but if any blokes do offer please be aware I will expect you to be on your best behaviour. If you don't, you'll be asked to leave.

If you feel it's something you would like to do please let me know. The dates for the ride are 14/15/16 September 2012. If you don't fancy being a marshal but would still like to take part please do, the more the merrier. ;D

Many thanks;D
