    Default Bmw r80/90/100

I already have a strange aroma of pee about me as I've have a few Bimmers and I really fancy an old one I can tinker with.

Apart from "Its a BMW!" what good reasons are there not to get one for a second bike.. seen these on FleaBay and have taken my fancy.

1979 BMW R80 WHITE EX POLICE on eBay (end time 07-Nov-09 17:49:41 GMT)

1978 BMW R100 RS on eBay (end time 08-Nov-09 10:39:31 GMT)

I'm reasonably handy with a spanner and would like to learn more, but not on my everyday bike, far too many electronic widgets to knacker!

I know its slightly off course but I do rather like some of the cafe racer Beemers.

Makes a change from the Honda 750 fours.

the old airheads are nice machines, easy to modify, cheap spares (motorworks), easy to work on, and fun to ride.

    have a go!

A guy at work has a 1980 R100. its orange with black alloys, loud cans and what look like non standard stromburgs. its a great looking bike and sounds lovely.
he's also got an R80 Cafe racer 70's vintage. red frame, blue tank, tiny alloy gaurds, spoked wheels with alloy rims - a really tiny and tidy cafe racer.

I'd happily own either of them - go buy one and post your project!

In the early '80s there were a lot of detail changes, electronic ignition and nikasil bores were introduced. Points are cheaper to fix and you can do it at the roadside. The nikasil barrels do something like 100k and then need to be thrown away and replaced. steel sleeves can be re-bored and even cut out and replaced.

Honest question but why do they need to be replaced?
I've had my KX cylinder re-plated before and have another spare cylinder that's freshly re-plated waiting as well, and another spare head, and another spare bike

Admittedly re-plating isn't anything like as cheap as a re-bore but its viability depends on how cheap a new cylinder is compared to re-plating.

Not from first hand experience, but I'm told re-platers of suitable quality are few and far between and not know for rapid turnaround or for VFM. Horses for courses I guess, and costs. Rebores will be the cheaper and quicker by far.

BTW this is what a R100RS looks like

I have a 1985 R80 Mono which I use everyday. The 85 R80 mono is renowned as the best one as it was the return bike after BMW stopped making the Airheads for a while. You are welcome to a test ride. I am only over by the M2 bridge. Several in the classic bike mags at the moment. Dont be put off by high mileages. They do have faults but most are an easy fix if you are mechanically minded. My gearbox quit two weeks ago because of a well known fault of a breaking spring. £1.39 for the part but a weekend to fix as it is a gearbox out job. But the gearbox is seperate so an easy fix. Not something you can do in a day on a jap machine. Wouldnt part with it as it does everthing I want it to do. Ignore the Hi-vis paint this was done by the previous owner and I cant be bothered to repaint it. It is an odd bike in that it has an RS fairing and BMW did not make an R80RS. The panels are also bespoke again by the previous owner. This is it compared to an R80RT.

This is the gearbox in all its simplicity.

Just looked on eBay again, the white one went for just over £1k.

I've yet to ride an Old R, current bike is an R12S and used to have R11S's so I enjoy airheads, the cafe racer look is nice.. will keep my eyes open..

Cheers for the offer Mach' I might take you up on that, should I manage to get any time off work!

You will need the drive shaft puller and the plate to go on the end to shim the gearbox up after replacing the little spring not that easy of a job

The other thing that is shit on them is the charging system if you do low speed riding around town with your lights on

Compared to any other bike of the same era the charging system is brilliant
